Newcastle Youth Leadership Forum
In 2008 I introduced an annual Youth Leadership Forum for school leaders in the Newcastle Electorate.
Coinciding with National Youth Week, the forum provides an opportunity for school captains and prefects to learn about their role as leaders and communicate to me what Newcastle needs now and into the future.
A leadership coach facilitates the forum, guiding students through a range of exercises and group discussions to define the qualities of leadership, identify students' personal leadership style, and create a vision for the future of Newcastle.
I am continually impressed with the level of maturity, enthusiasm and understanding displayed by the public and private senior students who participate in the forum each year.
I am pleased to say that Newcastle's youth leaders are intelligent, articulate and passionate about the future of their community.
We must support our future leaders. The best way to do that is to help them realise the positive contribution they can make to their community and to empower them to act.
