About Newcastle

Welcome to Newcastle, Australia’s seventh largest city.

Situated on the east coast of Australia, approximately 2 hours north of Sydney, Newcastle is the gateway to the Hunter Valley and is famous for its stunning beaches, relaxed lifestyle and national heritage significance.

Newcastle has a tried and tested industrial strength that has laid the foundation for the city's growth over the years.

Since the closure of BHP steelworks in 1999, the Newcastle economy has begun to diversify and support the emergence of new and exciting industries.

Newcastle is now home to world-class medical research and renewable energy facilities.

The industrial strength of the city remains. Newcastle Harbour is the largest coal export port in the world and plans are underway to expand export capacity.

Increasingly, coal ships share the harbour with cruise liners, as national and international visitors come to experience the natural beauty and heritage of Newcastle.

Newcastle is also a proud sporting city with the Newcastle Knights and the Newcastle Jets supported by some of the most passionate and loyal fans in the world.

It is a city with great potential and considerable work is underway to stimulate the redevelopment and beautification of the city-centre, the coastline and sporting facilities.
